The field of data science is growing quickly, and the demand for talent is especially significant in the New York/New Jersey metropolitan area.
The Department of Data Science was established in July 2021 reflecting the significant steps taken in recent years by the College of Computing to position itself as a leader in data science education and research. Offering a B.S, M.S. and three graduate-level certificate programs, the department gives NJIT students across all degree levels an opportunity to explore this exciting and dynamic field, the deep underlying technologies driving data science and the broad spectrum of applications taking advantage of these technologies.
The department also complements NJIT’s Institute for Data Science, which focuses on multidisciplinary research and training of technology leaders to solve global challenges involving data and its analysis. The Institute looks to develop data-driven technologies through collaborations with NJIT’s existing research centers in Big Data, Medical Informatics and Cybersecurity and a future center for Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Located in the heart of the region where data scientist jobs are most needed in the United States, NJIT's strategic investment in data science education presents significant financial benefit for the tri-state region. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, May 2020 Occupational Employment and Wages Report, the New York-Newark-Jersey City metropolitan region has the highest number of jobs for data scientists and mathematical scientists in the nation.
